At Manchester Primary School we have been developing and implementing the framework of School Wide Positive Behaviour Support within our school. School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) operates on the premise that as well as being learners of literacy and numeracy, children are also learners of behaviour.
Using this framework, it is the role of the teachers and school community members to explicitly teach children appropriate behaviours and to set explicit behaviour expectations.

We are focused on promoting wellbeing in our school community to substantially improve social and emotional outcomes for our students, using the School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) framework. This evidence-based approach provides effective ways to create a positive and engaging learning environment, and has research to show its success in promoting positive behaviour, improving school culture, and increasing academic performance. Through this approach, we explicitly teach the expected positive behaviours which are outlined in our Positive Behaviour Matrix. This is further supported through our whole school Flying Start program and the Respectful Relationships program.
A key feature of SWPBS is our acknowledgement system. We want to be focused on those demonstrating positive behaviours on our behaviour matrix and give tokens in acknowledgement.
When giving a token, we name the value and behaviour….
“You can have a respectful token for taking turns.”
Students then place the token in the token collector. When collectors are full, the class will earn a predetermined reward, negotiated with their classroom teacher. When the whole school artwork is filled, students earn a whole school celebration.
